A Variation Analysis of the Tense/Aspect System of Stative Verbs in Salmantino Spanish

In my dissertation entitled “A Variation Analysis of the Tense/Aspect System of Stative Verbs in Salmantino Spanish,” I unite the areas of Spanish Language Variation and Change, Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Discourse Analysis to analyze how native speakers use verbs referring to states (i.e. ser, estar, tener) when narrating in the past tense. This research is based on a corpus of 25 oral interviews that I collected while in Salamanca, Spain. Until now this research topic has never been exhaustively explored, nor has it been investigated under a framework that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analyses of linguistic and social factors. This research seeks to identify the specific grammatical elements (e.g. person, verb type, polarity) and social characteristics of speakers (i.e. sex and age) that shape how past tense forms are chosen by the Salmantino speech community. By exposing which linguistic and social factors influence speaker choice, many unanswered questions can be brought to light concerning the Spanish past tense system, as well as the exact role that verbs referring to states play in this phenomenon. This investigation also will determine whether the different forms of stative verbs in the past tense point toward linguistic change or whether the preference of one form over another is a defining characteristic of speakers of a particular social group, thus offering a connection to the broader picture of Spanish language evolution. Finally, the findings of this research will help to revise and refine grammatical explanations in Spanish textbooks to appropriately reflect native speaker face-to-face conversation, which will allow non-native students to attain a more native-like proficiency in the language.

Subject personal pronoun use among monolinguals, heritage speakers and advanced second language learners of Spanish

I combine the areas of language variation, bilingualism and second language acquisition in my dissertation on the use of Spanish subject personal pronouns by monolingual Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican heritage speakers who have grown up in the United States, and advanced second language learners of Spanish. Though this area of morphosyntax has been studied extensively in Spanish, no one study has brought together these three groups, nor have the various factors found to influence subject expression (such as switch-reference, priming, frequency of certain verbal constructions, etc.) been considered simultaneously. In other words, there has been no satisfactory explanation given thus far for why supposedly unnecessary or redundant subject pronouns are produced by native speakers. Furthermore, a general perception exists that second language learners produce an overabundance of subject pronouns, yet their spontaneous oral production has not been adequately compared to that of native speakers on the same task. In this study, I have utilized the sociolinguistic interview, a one-hour, informal conversation, to obtain data from thirty participants, ten in each of the groups mentioned above. 200 overt and null subject pronouns will then be extracted from each interview and coded for quantitative analysis. In addition to the importance of the role of switch-reference, I propose that priming plays a substantial part in the use of overt pronouns.

Recomendaciones: ¿Cómo construir un CV efectivo?

El martes 23 de septiembre, la profesora Nichols dirigió el taller de preparación de un CV, auspiciado por la Tertulia. El taller fue sumamente informativo y la prof. Nichols discutió con los presentes cómo comenzar a construir el CV, cómo mantenerlo y cómo hacerlo más “atractivo” para el mercado de trabajo. Por medio de varios ejemplos, pudimos notar la efectividad de un CV bien pensado y constantemente revisado.

Con el fin de beneficiar a todos los interesados que no pudieron acompañarnos, la Prof. Nichols redactó y ofreció seis recomendaciones que tenemos que tener en cuenta al momento de escribir tan importante documento.

1. Comienza a preparar tu cv el primer día de tu carrera de posgrado, y ve añadiendo elementos relevantes a medida que los tengas.

2. Cuando tengas que enviarlo para una competencia o un puesto, asegúrate que no parece artificialmente alargado. A veces los principiantes intentan impresionar con un cv más largo de la cuenta, pensando que la extensión impresiona. Pero los lectores de los cv saben ir al grano.

3. Hazlo visualmente claro: sólo tres variantes de letra/énfasis. Por ejemplo: usa Times New Roman 12 con tres variantes: la letra común (1), small caps para las categorías (2) y subrayado (3). Claro que puedes escoger otras formas de enfatizar, pero no excedas 3 variantes.

4. Lo que más quieres destacar debe colocarse en el tercio medio de la página.

5. Si has ganado un premio o una beca o una distinción que una persona de afuera no sabrá evaluar, explícalo muy brevemente, entre paréntesis.

6. Prepáralo, déjalo descansar un rato, vuelve a retocarlo, dáselo a un par de amigos del ramo para que lo critiquen, vuelve a revisarlo, pide a un/a profesor/a que lo critique, vuelve a revisarlo. Y ya.

Resumen de La representación de la ciudad a través del discurso de la violencia

Los rápidos procesos de urbanización evidenciados a mediados del siglo XX en América Latina y que se reflejan en literatura no son independientes de otros acontecimientos sociales que deben ser tomados en cuenta al momento de analizar productos culturales. Las ciudades han sido texto y contexto en las obras literarias y sus representaciones han sido construídas desde distintas perspectivas. La violencia ha tomado un papel predominante en algunas de las formas de narrar la ciudad. El objetivo de mi trabajo es estudiar la representación de la ciudad a través del discurso de la violencia en Caracas, Medellín y Río de Janeiro. Para ello tomaré novelas contemporáneas que dan cuenta de la ciudad como elemento esencial de la narración en la que la violencia toma la palabra para desarrollar conceptos de representación del espacio.

Resumen de Second Language Variation on Ser and Estar

The main purpose of my study is to investigate the effects of type and quantity of Spanish input that second language learners are exposed to (e.g., input received from native Spanish speakers within a Spanish/ English community versus input from formal instruction) as demonstrated in their usage of ser and estar. The uniqueness of this study lies in part that very little previous work has examined advanced second language learners with respect to their copula choice. At the same time, the innovative methodological approach I am taking, namely using a children's picture book to elicit naturalistic data which can be analyzed in terms of a variety of independent variables(extra-linguistic factors such as age, formal instruction, gender, exposure to Spanish media, social network, and experience abroad) will allow me to investigate the nature of L2 copula choice among advanced second language learners from a perspective that few have taken previously.

Mesa especial para la Tertulia: ¿Cómo construir un C.V?

Como parte de los talleres pre-profesionales que normalmente se dan en el otoño para los estudiantes graduados, la profa. Geraldine Nichols ha ofrecido dar una sesión sobre la preparación del currículum vitae. La sesión no se limita a los que van a buscar trabajo este año, porque todo estudiante graduado debe tener un cv básico siempre preparado. Es mucho más fácil ponerlo al día cuando se presenta una oportunidad que tener que producirlo de la nada. Habrá una presentación de parámetros generales y algunos modelos, dejando tiempo para preguntas puntuales. Si alguien quiere que se comente su cv, lo puede traer en un flash drive, y si hay tiempo, se comentará para beneficio de todos.
